It should be conscious of what it is doing at the moment. Themission of the organization gives it a platform to estimate and laystrategies on where it wants to be after a certain time. This isbecause there are numerous directions it can take if it does not havea specified vision.

Fromthe Cat’s comments, it is possible that every path taken by a firmwill lead it somewhere. It is, therefore, possible for businesses toexecute plans that look successful but at the end of the day fail tolead them to realize their goals if they do not set up visions. Incase, a company is not able to clearly define the visions set, thedirections taken may even move it far away from the initialobjectives. In such a case, it is even better for the firm not totake up any direction than taking a misdirected path an aspect thatis well depicted in the Cat’s comment.

Pursuingof visionless directions leads to wastage of finance, human energy,and time hence, reducing the competitiveness of the business.Consequently, it is necessary for any business that aspires to moveforward to define the strategic direction it is taking. This is onlypossible by having a well-documented mission, vision, code ofconduct, and objectives for the firm (Moseley, 2009).


Strategicplanning is a critical part of any entity`s future. Sun Tzustatement about victorious warriors winning a war and the failureslosing it way before the actual war stresses on the need foreffective strategic planning (Sun, 2002).

Towin and remain competitive in the future, a firm should start byscanning the environment to gather, organize, and analyze relevantinformation. This move enables one to detect the prospects and thethreats that exist in the environment. This forms the basis for anydecisions and long-term goals.

Goodunderstanding of the environment gives room for the formulation ofstrategies. In this phase, managers need to prioritize theirobjectives and come up with specific strategies that will addresseach of the objectives. This stage also ensures that allocation ofresources for each strategy is adequate.

Thestrategies formulated should be clearly communicated to make theimplementation process easier. Every party should be aware of theentities vision and their role towards the realization of the setobjectives (Moseley, 2009). The firm should also evaluate thestrategies that were employed previously to ensure that they do notrepeat certain mistakes. This will also help in coming up with finestpractices and adjustments. One is bound to fail in future endeavorsif he does not focus on these dimensions.


Itis evident from the Cat`s response and Sun Tzu`s statement that bothemphasize the need for strategic planning. They both bring out theaspect of taking a rational direction with well-defined visions inpractice. However, the Cats comments can be relevant in cases wherethe organization does not have a clear vision but seeks to take adirection while Sun Tzu`s statement can be employed in a situationwhere a firm has a clear vision but fails to effectively plan on therealization the set dream.
