Role Play as aTraining Technique
Training and development is a pertinent part of every organization.Knowledge management and talent development have the biggestimplication to an organization in terms of goal achievement. Roleplay is an approach in which participants are presented with anartificial environment idealized to simulate the situations they facein their day to day operations(Andrew, 2011). Role plays help to improvecommunication skills and increase social awareness(Jackson & Back, 2011).
The success of the approach is dependent on the role brief, setscenario, and the goals expected from the technique. The approachmay be used when learning certain behaviors. Also, the technique isused when there is a need to analyze a problematic situation and comeup with ways of addressing it. The technique is also crucial whenlearning insights into the motivation of others. Lastly, the roleplay approach is crucial when developing a holistic understanding ofone’s job for present and future purposes (Andrew,2011).
I once worked for a shoe company as a salesperson and together withothers new recruits, we were taught using role play. Some of theskills we learnt from the role play include courtesy, persuasion,negotiation, communication, and complaints management. During therole play training, we were expected to simulate acustomer-salesperson interaction. Some of the employees played therole of salespersons while others tried to simulate the customers’behaviors.
While in high school, our teacher created several role-playactivities. In one of the activities, we were expected to simulatethe first interaction between two students: one American and theother international. The conversation was to start with the twoparticipants inquiring about each other`s name, the course of study,and any other introductory information.
