Question1: Human aging
Thestudy of human aging is important in understanding the distinctcharacteristics of older individuals. In evolution, aging is observedas a universal trait that occurs to all living things. In otherfields such as in public health, it is considered as a very criticalfactor as far as human pathologies are concerned. This includes oldage related health conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases likeAlzheimer’s, various cancer diseases and metabolic diseases. Therefore, there is a need to study human aging as many of the abovediseases or conditions are seen to prevalent among the oldpopulation. Hence, there is a need for exploring the underlyingmolecular and cellular processes in the human body that naturallydeteriorates with old age. This deterioration often leads to diseasessusceptibility among these old populations. As a result, they needconstant and efficient health care services as compared to otherpopulation categories.
Thereis an increased need for healthcare services among the old populationbecause of their level of vulnerability to diseases. There areresearch projects underway that are aimed at establishing themolecular pathway, normally responsible for underpinning the agingprocess in human beings. This study becomes critical if there is aneed of gaining a deeper insight on the aging process. This is mainlyaimed at equipping the medical practitioners with tools necessary forcurbing old age diseases or conditions in the human body. This willhence grant them with the right medical and healthcare options thatwill be able to cater for the onset of old age disorders.
Recently, research and development has led to an increased number ofindividuals who are able to reach old age. However, the key reasonthat this observation is made is because there has been an improvedhealthcare system over the years. It is however important to notethat with such an increase in the orderly in the society, has led toan increase of older people living with chronic diseases in thesociety. This onset of chronic diseases is often accompanied bymultiple co-morbidities. Therefore, this study is important tostudying and establishing a healthier old age life of the currentpopulation.
Inunderstanding the rationale for Gerontology, it is important tounderstand all the healthcare providers for the old. When agingoccurs in the society, the family members are usually encouraged totake the aging parents in care centre that is exclusively establishedas home for the old people. There is usually an indispensable caretaker in this centre is wholly responsible to all clients taken intothis facility. This healthcare is known as the nurse, who ensuresthat all clients’ needs are met and is taken care with utmostrespect. For this reason, the nurse comes at the top of the list withtrained and born values such as love and compassion among the oldpopulation clients.
Thesenurses usually posses all good qualities that the society expects ofthem as well as their working professionals. They typically undergo acontinuous geriatric care training services on the healthcare andmanagement of the elderly in any hospital. This is usually aspecialized type of system that any prospectus nurse undergoes inbecoming a generalist or a specialist in that particular field ofnursing. After successfully completing, a qualified nurse is usuallyoffered with a certificate of geriatric thatallows him or her to practice in the healthcare.
Theglobal accepted age for old age has been set at sixty five and overyears of age in any individual. However, such a definition andacceptability is not globally accepted because of dynamic and varyingcultures like in Africa. Many countries have defined this terminologybased on the acceptable age that one is basically allowed to receivenational pension benefits. However, some international organizationssuch as the United Nations have defined an elderly as any personbearing sixty and above years of age. For this reason, there is nogeneral agreement as the exact age that an individual is assumed tobe old. Different geographical locations have different definitionsto the term old age in this context.
Theimportance of studying oldest-old
Thestudy of oldest-old is important because it provides researchers withfactors that are critical for human longevity. It is not easy for anyindividual to live up to eighty plus years in the currentgenerations. Growing to such old age has been attributed to differentlifestyles, activities and the food consumed by such individuals. Allthese factors are critical in the study of the oldest of the age inany society. In addition, these individuals provide researchers orscientists with information regarding the study of epidemiology ofdementia. This is because this group of population is more likely tobe infected with old age medical conditions that are worth examining.
Peopleat oldest-old are often associated with decline of functional andcognitive health conditions. These are usually psychological ormental conditions that normally occur among the old in any society ascompared to others. The study of this particular population assiststhe scientists to invent or discover the causes of memory loss andhence help prevent it. This is always accompanied by disability amongthis population, which is a mental problem.
