Anetwork involves a group of computers and other devices that areconnected to aid exchange of data to facilitate business. In themodern era, the business environment largely depends on computernetworks to process the large volumes of information and datainvolved besides facilitating communication between the partiesinvolved. Therefore, it is paramount to know and understand thefunctionalities of the different components that make up a network inthe business environment. The basic concepts for networks in thebusiness world today include network adapters, network devices,Ethernet, bandwidth, Ethernet specifications, protocols, ports,internet protocol, Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks(WANs), network architecture and server among others.
Network Adapters – These are hardware devices that run a frontier between a computer and a network connection. There are various types of network adapters based on the source of the connection defined by a business’s internet needs.
Network devices – These are constituents that are used to interconnect electronic devices and computers to facilitate the exchange of information. They include USB cables, flash devices, routers, and the firewall software among others. The firewall offers protection of computer files against undesirable interference.
Ethernet – This is a popular network standard, which is installed for Local Area Network. It serves as a linkage procedure that describes the format of data for transmission among devices.
Bandwidth – Bandwidth describes the amount of data that a medium can transmit. It can also be defined as the volume of information that a medium can convey in a unit second.
Protocols – In networking, protocols refer to regulations that control the communication between two computers connected to the same network. Protocols address and route messages, detect errors and facilitate recovery of information among other things.
Ports – In terms of computer hardware, ports are endpoints of communications on the PC or central processing unit. They allow information exchange between the computer and removable devices such as flash discs. On the other hand, in terms of computer software, ports refer to virtual concepts that identify certain processes of types of network services.
Internet protocol – Also known as IP, the internet protocol is a framework that breaks down initial information into units of standardized size for easier transmission. It also routes bits of information across successive networks from the source to the intended destination. There are various types of internet protocols such as the transmission control protocol (TCP) and the Internet application protocols among others (IAP)
Local Area Network – This is a type of network, which is used in a building or in buildings that are close together. Examples include Fiber and Ethernet.
Wide Area Network – This is the opposite of LAN, and as the name suggests, it covers vast areas such as countries and cities.
Network architecture: This primarily refers to the design of any network intended for communication purposes. It is a framework that puts together the physical constituents of a network and their functional alignment and organization together with its processes and codes of its operation.
Server – A server can be defined as a software package or device that gives other programs and devices their functionality. These other programs and devices are referred to as clients, thus the origin of the server-client model. Severs control hardware and software accessibility such that clients cannot access certain information if they not connected to the server.
