As a result of usinginformation technology, medication errors have been mitigatedsignificantly, and decisions have been swiftly made based onavailable evidence. This is criticaltowards patient safety since the sick can access the right drugs, aswell as recommended doses, for their medication. Also, EHRs haspromoted clinical decisions support (CDS) and computerized providerorder entry (CPOE) that offers practitioners with a proper guideconcerning medications and allergies of patients, which wouldfacilitate clinicians in making the best decisions that would ensurepatient safety.
Furthermore,with IT being integrated into health care organizations, it isfeasible to store patients’ information in a central place andaccess them easily from different locations. This is crucial forpatient safety since the data can be used in making vital healthdecisions when patients move from one health facility to another(Lavin, Harper & Barr, 2015). For instance, due to electronicaccess to patient information, it is possible to access his/herhistorical data that would make it easy to provide the correcttreatment.
Informationtechnology has been used in health organizations to enhance patientsafety since IT can be utilized to make a facility more efficient inreporting, tracking, as well as aggregating reports concerningpatients within and across health centers (U.S. Department of Health& Human Services, 2012).
