Running head: AGILE WEEK 1 1
How do agile project management approaches relate to traditional (PMI PMBOK) approaches?
Thereis no standard project management approach applicable to allprojects. The agile and the traditional approaches are the essentialtypes of project management approaches. The agile approaches emergedas an alternative to the traditional approaches, meaning severaldifferences exist between the two. While traditional approaches focuson the plan and adherence to the established plans, the agileapproaches emphasize customer satisfaction and interaction. Besides, agile approaches place more emphasis on adaptability andresponsiveness to change while the traditional approaches focus oncontrol over amendments of the established plan and changemanagement. Given their rigid nature, traditional approaches arebetter suited for construction projects where very few sequences arerequired to complete the whole project. On the other hand, agileapproaches are more flexible, therefore, are better suited toinnovative and volatile projects, including software development(Moran,2015).
What is Scrum and how does it relate to agile methodologies?
Scrumrefers to an agile framework used to complete complex projects. Itallows agility to be introduced in a project given its flexibilityand simplicity by incorporating a simple set of responsibilities, roles as well as meetings. Scrum reduces the complexity of projectsby improving communication, teamwork and speed (Moran,2015).
What are the three main scrum roles
Thethree scrum roles are the product owner, scrum master and thedevelopment team (Scrumguides,2016).The product owners serve customer value by being visionary, authoritative and available. Additionally, they communicate thepriorities as well as the vision of the project to the developmentteam constantly. Achieving the right balance of involvement might bequite difficult for product owners. As such, they should be able tofend off the urge to micro-manage (Scrumguides,2016).The scrum master links the team to the product owner. They servecustomer value by ensuring those who are not part of the scrum teamhave a full understanding of the unhelpful and helpful interactionswith the scrum team. The development team includes all theprofessionals responsible for delivering tangible results at the endof each sprint, and serves customer value by determining how toaccomplish the tasks in each sprint
Identify and discuss one company or government agency actively using Agile PM
Sincethe inception of agile and scrum techniques in the 1980s, manycompanies have adopted the approaches. One such company is Apple Inc.By actively using scrum, the company has consistently remained amongthe leading global corporations for over a decade now. At Apple Inc.,employees are encouraged to be free and comfortable, and they workwithin teams under a leader who is fully responsible for the results(Denning,2012).They are also encouraged to take up functions that they arecomfortable with and strongest at. Taking the scrum technologies intoconsideration, the product owner in Apple’s case is the former CEO,the late Steve Jobs (Denning,2012).The company usually assigns major projects to small teams. The smallteams eliminate the complexities and constraints involved with largeteams, especially in the technology industry, allowing the company tocome up with new products in short and iterative cycles (Denning,2012).
